Kits and bundles
Mark a product as a kit, list its ingredients, and every order for the pack deducts the ingredients instead. The Bundle Capacity panel then tells you how many packs you can ship and which ingredient runs out first.
You sell a Hair Care Starter Pack: one shampoo, one conditioner and a travel comb. The warehouse holds shampoos, conditioners and combs, and when an order for the pack comes in, a packer pulls one of each. A kit is how you tell the account that, so the pack sells as one product on the site and deducts three products from stock.
Kit setup
Open the product's detail drawer from the Inventory page and click the Kit components tab. Click Add component, pick the ingredient product and the quantity needed per pack, and repeat for each ingredient. Save. From the next order on, an order for the pack takes one shampoo, one conditioner and one comb out of stock, and nothing is deducted for the pack itself, because the pack does not exist as stock. A holiday hamper with six products is the same idea with six components, each with a quantity of one.
Bundle capacity
Because the pack has no stock of its own, the account works out how many complete packs you could ship from the ingredients. With 100 shampoos, 80 conditioners and 200 combs, you can ship 80 Starter Packs; the conditioner runs out first. The Bundle Capacity panel at the bottom of the Inventory page lists every kit with the bundle name as your customers know it, how many complete packs you can fulfil right now, and the bottleneck SKU, which is the ingredient that runs out first and therefore the one to reorder.
A bundle's stock is whatever ingredient you have least of.
The bottleneck
When the panel says your holiday hamper can fulfil twelve and the bottleneck is the artisan chocolate bar, that is the morning to ring the chocolatier. Set a reorder point on the ingredients that matter rather than on the pack, because the alert has to fire on the product you buy. Reorder alerts and anomalies shows how.
Orders, reservations and refunds
Orders for a kit land on the Orders page like any other, and the reservation at payment reserves the ingredients, so a Starter Pack sold on the site cannot take a conditioner that a single-product order already claimed. Refunds work on the ingredients too: a refund flagged as restock puts them back.
Questions we get asked.
Do I need to hold stock of the pack itself?
No. The pack is defined by its ingredients, and the account works out how many complete packs the ingredients allow. If you did stock assembled packs separately, they would be a different product.
Can an ingredient also be sold on its own?
Yes, and both draw from the same stock. A reservation for the pack and a reservation for the single product commit the same units, so the ingredient cannot be oversold through either route.
How do I set up a pack that contains another pack?
Define each pack by its actual ingredients, the products a packer pulls from the shelf. That keeps the capacity figure true, because the bottleneck is always a unit in a bin.
How do I know which ingredient to reorder?
The Bundle Capacity panel names the bottleneck SKU for each kit. Put a reorder point on that ingredient and the alert reaches you before the pack goes out of stock.
